Dr. Laura Brenner

Laura Brenner

After dreaming of becoming a dentist her whole life, Dr. Laura Brenner learned that dentistry wasn’t a match for her. She practiced for 10 years before leaving clinical dentistry to become a blogger, a speaker, and a certified professional coach. After her blog post, “10 Reasons Your Dentist Probably Hates You Too,” went viral, she began connecting with dental professionals around the world who wanted more from their careers. This inspired her to create Lolabees Career Coaching to guide dental professionals in designing their careers on their terms, so they can plan, create, and live joyful, balanced lives.

Innovator Insights

  • Distinguish Between Types of Burnout: Recognize that there are two types of burnout – one stemming from a dislike for the profession and the other arising even when one loves what they do. Understanding which category you fall into is crucial, as the treatment plans for each differ significantly.
  • Invest in Self-Reflection and Mindset Work: Prioritize self-reflection and work on your mindset. Addressing perfectionism and how you interpret events can be transformative in combating burnout. Engaging in personal development activities, such as reading, therapy, or working with a coach, can also be invaluable.
  • Embrace Play and Creativity: Allow yourself to play and explore creative outlets. This can be a powerful antidote to burnout and can help rekindle a sense of joy and purpose in your work. Engaging in activities that stimulate your creative thinking can lead to a fresh perspective on your career.
  • Consider Career Change as a Viable Solution: If you find yourself in a state of prolonged burnout and dissatisfaction with your current profession, consider the possibility of a career change. Be open to exploring alternative paths, and seek guidance from mentors, coaches, or career counselors to navigate this transition successfully.
  • Build a Supportive Community: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who understand your challenges and aspirations. Seek out mentors or coaches who have experience in your field and can provide valuable insights and guidance. Building a community can be a powerful source of support and encouragement during times of transition.
